Avatar still Reigning at the Top of the Box Office

After 5 straight weeks at the top of the box office, critics and fans are wondering if Avatar can break the all time box office record. Avatar has been grossing more profit in the last 5 weeks than any other competitor set out to compete. At the end of the Martin Luther King weekend, Avatar grossed an estimated $54 million beating The Book of Eli, which grossed $38 million, bringing Avatar’s total box office to over $500 million.

World Wide audiences loved the thrills of Avatar too. France remains Avatar’s biggest market of all with $115.3 billion. China’s market this past weekend grossed $17.9 million and is already the China’s highest grossing movie ever with $75.6 million.
Italy made $15.2 million while Avatar is South Korea’s highest grosser over all with $70.7 million.

The 500 million dollars Avatar has grossed makes it the fastest motion picture to cross the mark, which took only 32 days. The closest competitor was the Dark Knight in 2008, with 45 days, which broke Titanic’s record of 98 days.

1997’s Titanic, with a 200 million dollar budget, is still the number one movie of all time with just over $600 million in the U.S. and over $1.84 billion worldwide. The Dark Knight, with a 185 million dollar budget, is runner up with $533 million domestically and just over $ 1billion world wide. Although The Dark Knight currently beats Avatar at the U.S. box office by just shy of $30 million, Avatar, with it’s nearly 300 million dollar budget, is the number 2 movie worldwide with gross revenue of just over $1.62 billion.

Now that critics have seen the profits Avatar can do, then they should have the same high expectations as I do. Since, Avatar is only $95 million short of Titanic and has accomplished more than Titanic with only 30 percent of the time, I expect Avatar to be the first movie to break Titanic’s record at the box office. Avatar will break The Dark Knight’s record of $533 million for the number two spot this upcoming weekend at the box office.

I believe Avatar will clinch the number one spot of the all time box office domestically within 5 weeks and be the first movie to gross revenue $2 billion worldwide, but I guess we will have to wait and see.
